Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Services
Simplex Electricals is one of India’s most experienced HDD contractors — operating owned and leased drilling rigs from 20 to 60 tonne capacity. We execute trenchless pipeline crossings for railways, national highways, water bodies, and urban corridors, installing HDPE and steel casings for power cables, OFC, water mains, and oil & gas lines. With 700+ route kilometres of trenchless ducting and 75+ railway crossings completed, we bring proven systems and owned equipment to every project.
Overview
Trenching is not always an option. Active railway tracks, national and state highways, river crossings, ecologically sensitive zones, and dense urban corridors all demand a trenchless solution that causes zero surface disruption and meets strict regulatory requirements.
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is the most widely used and reliable trenchless method for these situations. A pilot bore is drilled along a carefully engineered underground path, progressively reamed to the required diameter, and the pipeline — HDPE or steel — is pulled back through the bore in a single controlled operation.
At Simplex, our HDD teams are trained across varied soil conditions — from the running sands of coastal Odisha to the hard rock of the Chota Nagpur plateau — and experienced in the documentation and compliance requirements of railway, highway, and utility authorities.
We work directly with DISCOMs, Indian Railways, EPCs, and industrial owners.

Feasibility Assessment & Bore Path Design
Before any drilling begins, we assess subsurface conditions, crossing geometry, existing utilities, and authority permit requirements. Bore path profiles are engineered to meet minimum cover depths, radius of curvature limits, and pull-back force calculations — ensuring the design is executable, not just theoretical.
Permit & Statutory Clearance Support
HDD crossings under railways, national highways, and water bodies require prior approvals from Indian Railways, NHAI, state PWD, or other authorities. Our teams are experienced in preparing crossing proposals, and compliance submissions for clearance.
Pilot Bore Drilling
Using our XCMG and Goodeng HDD rigs, we drill a precision pilot bore along the engineered path using a steerable drill head and tracker. Bentonite drilling fluid is circulated throughout to stabilise the bore, cool the drill bit, and remove cuttings — with mud management handled on-site to maintain clean working conditions.
Reaming & Bore Enlargement
The pilot bore is progressively enlarged through single or multiple reaming passes to a diameter sufficient for pipeline installation — typically 1.2–1.5x the outer diameter of the pipe. Reaming is carried out with appropriate back-reamers selected for the soil type, with drilling fluid volumes adjusted to maintain bore stability throughout.
Pipeline Pullback
The prefabricated pipeline — HDPE pipe welded by butt fusion or steel/iron casing prepared to specification — is assembled at the exit side and pulled back through the reamed bore in a controlled operation. Pull-back forces are monitored continuously. We have successfully pulled back HDPE pipes up to 450mm diameter and are equipped for larger diameters as project requirements demand.
Post-Drilling Works & Handover
Our team manages the complete execution post drilling also. Termination for power lines and telecom cables, electrical works, pressure testing are all completed before handover. HDD completion records, bore logs, as-built crossing profiles, and test certificates are compiled and submitted.
